Vertical or Horizontal Video? Where Each Format Wins

Every property video conversation eventually hits the same fork: horizontal or vertical? The honest answer is that they're different tools, and the format should follow where the video will live.
The case for horizontal
Horizontal is the language of cinema, every movie you've ever watched was framed this way, and there's a reason: it matches how we see, with room for composition, movement, and context. For a property film, horizontal simply looks better: rooms breathe, drone shots sweep, and the home gets the cinematic treatment. It's the right format for the MLS, YouTube, your listing page, a property website, and anywhere it might play on a TV or laptop.
The case for vertical
Vertical wins where your audience actually scrolls: Instagram Reels, TikTok, Facebook stories. On a phone, a vertical video fills the entire screen, while a horizontal one shrinks into a letterboxed strip. The platforms also favor native vertical content in their algorithms. If the goal is reach, social engagement, and stopping thumbs, vertical is the format doing the work.
So which one?
Match the format to the destination, and know that a serious marketing plan usually wants both: the horizontal film as the listing's centerpiece, and a vertical cut feeding social. One caveat worth knowing: a great vertical isn't a cropped horizontal. The framing decisions are different, which is why shooting both properly means composing for each format on site.
How we handle it
For listings, our Spotlight social video can be filmed horizontally or vertically at the same price, and getting both a horizontal and a vertical cut is +$125 (because we genuinely film the property for each format, not crop one into the other). For short-term rentals, the cinematic video is up to 60 seconds in either format for $250, a fuller 2-minute horizontal cut is $350, and both cuts together are $375.
