Corporate Headshots vs. LinkedIn Headshots, What's the Difference?

The question comes up constantly: "I need a headshot, do I need a corporate one or a LinkedIn one?" The answer depends on where you'll use it. A law firm's website bio calls for something very different from a sales professional's LinkedIn profile. Here's how to tell which one you need, and what each involves.
1. Background
Corporate headshots almost always use a neutral, controlled background, seamless paper, a professional studio backdrop, or a clean architectural element in your office. The background is intentionally non-distracting because the focus is authority and professionalism.
LinkedIn headshots can use a cleaner environmental background, a blurred office background, a professional outdoor setting, or a light textured wall. The background can add personality and context without overwhelming the subject.
2. Expression and body language
Corporate headshots call for composed, confident expressions. Genuine smiles are appropriate but not required, many professions like law, finance, and medicine actually perform better with a more measured, serious expression that reads as competent and trustworthy.
LinkedIn headshots should lean warmer. Research consistently shows that approachable, smiling profile photos get more connection requests, message responses, and engagement on LinkedIn. The platform is built on professional networking, people connect with people they want to work with, not just people who look impressive.
3. Attire
For corporate headshots: match what you actually wear in client-facing contexts. A financial advisor in a suit. A lawyer in a blazer. A doctor in their white coat over business casual. The photo should reflect the standard your clients expect.
For LinkedIn: one notch more relaxed than your office standard. A polished blazer over a smart shirt without a tie reads better on LinkedIn than full formal wear, which can feel stiff in a social media context.
A note specifically for NJ real estate agents
Real estate agents sit in an interesting middle ground, you need to look professional enough to be trusted with someone's largest financial transaction, but approachable enough that people want to call you. The polished-but-stiff corporate photo often works against agents on social media and Zillow profiles where warmth and likability matter.
Our recommendation for agents: A primary headshot that's professional and polished for your MLS profile and business card, then 2–3 "LinkedIn style" variations with a warmer expression and maybe a slightly different background for social media use. Post the LinkedIn version on Instagram and Facebook. Use the more formal version on official documents and Zillow.
The agent spotlight video is another option worth considering, a 30–60 second on-camera segment shot at a listing is one of the most effective personal branding tools in real estate. Learn more about agent spotlight videos →
